Abstract

The current study was conducted in North Kordofan State covering two consecutive seasons 2012/2013 and 2013/2014.The objectives of this study was to;Investigate the availability and accessibility of food, Identify the households' food security situations and to describe the socio-economic structure of households in the study area. The primary data were collected via questionnaire distributed to (250) respondents selected using multi-stage random sampling technique. The Statistical (SPSS) and the Household Economy Approach were used to analyze the collected data. The results of household economy approach showed that the daily energy received per person per day was calculated to be 2046.8, 3352.9, 2174.4 and 4003.5 k.cal, for Bara, El Rahad, Sheikan and Um Rawaba localities, respectively. In Bara and Sheikan households were border line or marginally food insecure, while El Rahad and Um Rawaba households were food secured. The quantity of cereals consumed by those food insecure groups is significantly lower than the recommended cereal ration of 2300 kcal per person per day; this is entail that Thresholds with lower caloric intake didn’t meet the recommended requirements for an active and healthy life
